Stroll through the tranquil lanes of Koko-en Garden, which sits on the former site of a feudal lord’s manor. The garden’s diverse landscapes have made it a popular filming location for historical blockbusters such as Rurouni Kenshin. You may feel as though you’ve stepped into one of these films as you cross colorful koi ponds, wander through shaded bamboo groves, and explore traditional structures that blend beautifully with their surroundings.
But you won’t find yourself in the middle of a sword duel here. Instead, the garden invites you to slow down, immerse yourself in its calm atmosphere, and appreciate the harmony between expert craftsmanship and lush nature.
With nine distinct gardens to explore, Koko-en offers a different experience with every season. In spring, cherry blossoms add soft pink accents to the garden, reflected beautifully in the ponds. Summer brings a rich world of green, punctuated by the purples, whites, and pinks of hydrangeas and other seasonal flowers. In autumn, the garden comes alive with brilliant reds and yellows, while winter brings a quieter landscape and a sense of stillness.

Overview
The tour begins at the entrance to Koko-en Garden, where you’ll meet your Himeji Tourist Concierge. From there you’ll proceed through the garden’s nine distinct areas at a comfortable, shared pace, receiving ample time to soak up each and every detail.
At each location, your concierge will introduce the intent behind the scene and the various elements that compose it, offering friendly insights as opposed to a lecture.
Along the way, you’ll encounter Soju-an, a teahouse, and Kassui-ken, a restaurant, which sit confidently amongst the natural scenery. While they aren’t included in the tour due to time constraints and availability, guests are encouraged to visit them independently afterwards.
Your route through the garden may vary depending on the season, congestion, and the wishes of the concierge.
After the tour finishes within the garden, you’re free to explore independently and apply the lessons you learned along the way.

- Bringing food or beverages into the garden, as well as eating or drinking, is not permitted.
- Writing on, damaging, or defacing buildings, walls, or gates is prohibited.
- Please do not touch trees, plants, or flowers.
- Entering lawns, moss areas, or areas outside the designated paths is not allowed.
- Commercial photography, pre-wedding shoots, or portrait photography for business purposes require prior application.
- Flying drones or other unmanned aerial vehicles is strictly prohibited.
- Please refrain from any behavior that may disturb other visitors.
- Pets are generally not allowed inside the garden.
- Pets may be permitted only if fully enclosed in a carrier, with no part of the animal exposed, and under the owner’s full responsibility.
Tour Conditions & Safety
- Some paths include gravel surfaces and steps. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
- While the garden includes paths with steps and gentle changes in elevation, wheelchair access is possible with assistance.
If you require special arrangements, please inform us at the time of booking.
- The tour content or route may change without prior notice due to weather conditions or operational requirements.
If the tour cannot operate due to severe weather, facility closure, or other unforeseen circumstances, guests will receive a full refund. Rescheduling may also be offered, subject to availability.
- We are not responsible for injuries, lost items, or damages during the tour. Participants are advised to take appropriate precautions.
- The garden may be crowded during peak seasons or on weekends.
Additional Information
The Kassui-ken Restaurant, connected by a covered corridor, is very popular and often fully booked.
As availability cannot be guaranteed, it is not included in this tour.
Guests are welcome to visit independently after the guided tour.
